Biography

I have spent my entire life creating things – written, drawn, painted, photographed, and built. I have also broken many things. And, in the process of breaking them, I discovered new ways to define my art, new ways to speak about those bits and pieces, the fragments, and their histories. I graduated from San Jose State University. Three times. I spent those academic years teaching computer skills to designers and writing skills to new students, and guiding young artists in making the most of their studio time. I detoured into high tech as a way to pay for student loans, art supplies, and studio time. I stayed active in the arts community and participated in group shows around Northern California. Now, I find myself at a crossroads, challenging the content of my art, writing, research, and teaching. I show my work at various local galleries and alternative spaces. I take workshops throughout the year to keep my art skills fresh and focused, but also to build relationships with creatives who consider themselves in a continuing state of emergence. One of my short articles was recently published, and I continue working on two poetry manuscripts. I now write with a focus towards small press and self-publishing. I participate in monthly readings and work with others to establish more artist and writer events around the Bay Area.

Recent Publications: Coffee Story, in Works And Conversations, Issue 32.
Recent exhibitions: Harrington Gallery, Pleasanton, Works Gallery, San Jose, Berkeley Art Center, Sebastopol Center for the Arts.

I have a BA in Mathematics, a BFA in Pictorial Arts, and an MFA in Spatial Arts.
I live and work in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Special Projects 1989 – 2018

2014 – ongoing. Open Mic Nights. Livermore, CA
Involved in the creation, definition, design, support, and presentation of open mic nights in various venues around Livermore, CA. This initially involved the reboot of the Stories Nights quarterly, open-mic fiction series, which has since evolved into the monthly series Whistlestop Writers, showcasing fiction, short fiction, flash fiction, and poetry.

2014 – ongoing. Nonsense/Games. Not site-specific.
A collaborative art project that continues on the original theme of the Medications/Games from ten years prior, but with the emphasis less on play, and more on the involvement of the nonsensical in human interaction. The first three games in this series still include a board/base and some number of game pieces, but now introduce found object and an implied goal, however vague and incomplete.

2009 – ongoing. Art Postcard Subscriptions. Not site-specific.
Release of a set of art postcards to a subscription list one to four times per year. Postcards as original artwork or taken from one or more series of photographs from travels around the SF Bay Area, California, United States, Canada, and Europe.

2002 – 2006. Art Curation. Adobe Systems, Inc. San Jose, CA.
Over the course of four years, curated two, juried, group art exhibitions showcasing the art and design of Adobe employees. All of these employees were artists, designers, photographers, and typographers. Converted a public-facing open/unused space into a temporary art gallery for the duration of the two exhibits.

2000 – 2004. Meditations/Games. Not site-specific.
Collaborative art project to create two sets of nonsensical games for patrons to buy and play, with direct interaction of the senses. Set One consisted of twelve unique games and was created over the years 2000 to 2002. Set Two consisted of nine unique games and was created in 2002. Games were all designed with a board, anodized aluminum game pieces, and absolutely no rules. Object of these games was for users to relearn and redefine play as the interacted with the games and with each other.

2000 – 2001. Illness Series. San Jose State University, San Jose, CA.
During the 2000/2001 academic year, produced a series of twenty works of art – both realized and unrealized – to capture the physical, emotional, and psychological aspects of illness among a small group of students who were challenged by auto-immune disorders. Art/presentation media included text, sound, interviews, visual work (2D/3D), video, site-specific, and conceptual approaches. Final series was presented to artists and staff via slides of the work and discussions.

Fall 2000 – Spring 2001. Webmaster/Consultant. San Jose State University, San Jose, CA.
Acted as a webmaster and consultant for Art History and Art Graduate students developing a web site covering multiple topics of 19th Century Paris. Worked with students to develop content, web pages, and the main site based on their own research and development strengths and needs. The web pages were created/hand-edited using HTML, Windows FrontPage and Netscape on Mac. Webmaster duties included maintaining the web site and web server, and handling all cross-product and cross-platform issues with Netscape Communicator, AOL, Internet Explorer, Macromedia, Microsoft, and Adobe software. May 1992. The Goddess. San Jose State University, San Jose, CA.
This was a multimedia project designed for high school students that interactively presented images of, and information about, the goddess in different cultures. Images were captured from slides digitized using a high-resolution slide scanner. Sound was added by digitizing taped speech and music. The graphical user interface was originally designed on a Macintosh then transferred to a PC (Windows), where the complete was assembled for use. This assignment fulfilled the requirements of a graduate level Art History class.

February 1992. Color Terminal Animated Demo. Wyse Technology, San Jose, CA.
Used special character escape sequences and a special character generation tool to create an animated demonstration for Wyse color terminals. The demonstration included the display of the Wyse logo and various scrolling messages across 4 rows of 10 color terminals. The development included extensive character generation, storyboarding, and animation mock-ups. (pre-dates move to Dell/Wyse)

September 1991. X Software Animated Demo. Wyse Technology, San Jose, CA.
This was an animated demonstration of Wyse Technology’s X terminal and X client software. It used scripts and a proprietary capture utility to mimic the user interface (keyboard and mouse input). The resulting demonstration ran at several UNIX and X conferences. This project required extensive scripting, storyboarding, the making of several mock-ups. (pre-dates move to Dell/Wyse)

February 1991. UNIX Animated Demo. Wyse Technology, San Jose, CA.
This was an animated demonstration of Wyse Technology’s UNIX product line. It used Autodesk Animator for DOS to create an English version and a French version of an animated demo advertising the UNIX product line. This project required storyboarding and several mock-ups. (pre-dates move to Dell/Wyse)

November 1990. Second Thought. San Jose State University.
This was an interactive multimedia piece about my thoughts, ideas, and memories. The piece was developed around a collection of sounds, text, and images that were stored on a videodisk. This material was combined with an interactive story running on a Macintosh computer. The viewer was able to access both the story and the material on the videodisk by following cues and prompts and by making selections with the computer mouse. The work was displayed in a gallery on the San Jose State University campus.

November 1990. Silicon Valley: Words and Images. San Jose State University.
This was a hand-made book of computer-written poems and digital images about Silicon Valley. The poems were written using a C language program and several dictionary databases. The images were created by digitizing several black and white photographs. The resulting images and poems were assembled using a desktop publishing program then printed and bound using a hand-made cover. The final book was displayed in a gallery on the San Jose State University campus.

May 1989. Computer Graphics and Animation Tutorial. San Jose State University.
This 2-D/3-D graphics and animation tutorial was developed on a UNIX-based workstation using the C programming language. The tutorial was designed to help teach basic concepts to Art and Design students who had little or no experience with computers, graphics, or animation. The user interface was designed to give the students a method for interacting and experimenting with the tutorial.
